Strategic Litigation on Behalf of Migrant Workers: To What Extent and How can Litigation Help Improve Their Working and Living Conditions?

Wednesday, January 29, 2025
13:00 – 14:15 CET, Online

This webinar is part of the joint Webinar Series on Irregular Migration, which brings together expertise and insights from six other ongoing Horizon Europe projects on irregular migration. This webinar will bring together legal experts to reflect on recent strategic litigation cases from around the world (including Europe, Canada, and Asia), including GS4S’ PI, Professor Tesseltje de Lange of Radboud University’s European Migration Law Centre and also PI of the HEU project DignityFIRM, webinar sponsor. Joining Professor de Lange as speakers:

  • Eleonora Celoria, Ph.D., a lawyer, ASGI member and researcher at FIERI, a GS4S consortium partner
  • Arwen Joyce, Ph.D., lecturer at Leicester Law School, University of Leicester
  • Eugénie Depatie-Pelletier, Ph.D., End Migrant Worker Unfreedom project director at DTMF-RHFW
  • Kris van der Pas, Ph.D., Postdoctoral researcher at Tilburg University

The discussion will explore to what extent and how legal strategies contributed to improvements in the working and living conditions of (including irregular) migrant workers. Additionally, we aim to consider areas where strategic litigation might help to address persistent situations of vulnerability.

This webinar is part of the ongoing DignityFIRM project, funded by Horizon Europe. For further details, please visit the DignityFIRM website and social media to stay updated on our research findings and upcoming events.

MPI – MMG in Dialogue: “Migration, Retention and Incorporation of the Highly Skilled”

MPI – MMG, Hermann Föge Weg, Goettingen and Online

This event will bring together experts on highly skilled migration in major migrant receiving countries in (South) East Asia as well as Germany to explore and compare the challenges of retaining, rather than simply recruiting, highly skilled migrants in ageing societies. Set against the backdrop of ongoing socio-cultural diversification, it will also focus on the tensions emerging between the different stakeholders in this process, including the receiving society, policy makers, firms, and the migrants themselves. Panelists will discuss the social implications of receiving and retaining highly skilled migrants, going beyond just labor market concerns. They will also challenge the perception of highly skilled migrants as either short-term stayers or individuals who integrate seamlessly. This In-Dialogue marks the culmination of the QuaMaFA Project, that examined the role of skills in labour migration in major migrant-receiving economies in (South)East Asia.

Speakers:

  • Chang Won Lee (Migration Research and Training Centre, South Korea)
  • Gracia Liu-Farrer (Waseda University, Japan)
  • Anja Weiss (University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany)

Webinar: “Fair Migration by Design? The Role of Recruitment in Migration Governance”

Technical University Berlin, Online
Organized by Prof. Dr. Felicitas Hillmann, Head of “Paradigm Shift_New Outlooks” at TU Berlin

This online event presents scientific analysis and seeks to provide substantial insights into the Canadian and German perspectives. What are key similarities and/or differences between the two countries, and what can we learn from them? Our webinar is dedicated to the various attempts to regulate recruitment processes. When diving deeper, highly untransparent and arbitrary structures can be observed. Still, global institutions such as IOM and ILO make efforts to regulate the sector. Canada was engaged in IOM’s IRIS initiative for ethical recruitment, and Germany developed its triple-win approach and global skills partnerships. Private employers speak of responsible recruitment by enhancing the “employer pays”-principle. Our webinar aims to bring together the current knowledge on the design of legal recruitment and the dangers of not regulating access to the future working conditions.
